Elba Island
May 2017

Elba is a beautiful island located on the western side of Italy. The island has many beaches and small towns.
The island has a long history following Napoleon's exile.

How to get there
There are several ways to get there, we decided to come with a rented car, so we boarded a ferry in Piombino. Tickets can be booked here. The tickets must be printed after purchase, we presented them before boarding the ferry with our car.

Hotel
We stayed at the Hotel del Golfo. The hospitality was wonderful, the hotel has a private beach and in our case we got a room with a sea view. At night we could hear the waves.
The hotel is located in a relatively central place on the island, so it was convenient to go on island excursions from there.

The nature of the trip
We really like to travel to different towns in the area where we are. Enjoy the atmosphere, the shops, and the view. On this trip there is also a lot of staying in the beach.
We day trips to the different towns. Every town has its own beach, and its uniqueness.

Capoliveri
An interesting town with a (relatively short) promenade, with an interesting view - of the island, as well as the various buildings.

Porto Azzurro
An interesting town with a port, and some small shops. It was nice to sit here.

Rio Marina
A beautiful town, with a port, basically we didn't sit here too much because we arrived right at the siesta and most of the businesses were closed.
A good stop to refresh yourself before continuing to "Beach Cala Seregola".

Beach Cala Seregola
A unique beach, with stones and dark soil.

Marciana Marina
Another town, with a beach and port. You can stop here on the way to "SantAndrea Beach".

SantAndrea Beach
This is a small beach. I wouldn't come here especially from the center of the island, although it is beautiful. If you are staying in the area or traveling around it can be nice.

  • Insurance
Several actions I did before the trip, I recommend you do them as well:

  • I confirmed with the car rental company that it is fine for them to take the car to Elba, and also that the car insurance is active on the island itself
  • I confirmed with the ferry company that the vehicle is covered by insurance in case of damage to the ferry (they confirmed but emphasized to me that if another vehicle hits our vehicle, it is not covered by their insurance. Likewise if we hit another vehicle. This is also not covered by the vehicle's insurance company). Basically you have to be careful.
  • I am not an insurance agent, this is not a recommendation, and you should verify and validate the insurance details before going on a trip.

    Driving In Elba
On one of the trips, Waze tried to lead us down a narrow dirt road that was really impassable. It is recommended to drive slowly and make sure that you can really drive at every point.
Also, there are places on the island where the roads are very narrow, and if a car arrives in front of you, it may be necessary to reverse tens of meters.
